Building Resilience Through Art-Making

A creative self care series for anyone who wants to feel more resourced in daily life.

Why art-making builds resilience

Resilience is not about being strong all the time. It includes the ability to notice when to rest, when to ask for help and how to regulate your own nervous system. Research shows that resilience is not a personality trait but a capacity that can be developed over time. It is about creating the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity and significant stress.

Learning ways of self-compassion is one of the strongest foundations of resilience. People who treat themselves with kindness recover faster from setbacks and are less destabilised by difficulty. A regular self care practice is itself an act of self-compassion. When we carve out time to restore rather than just produce, we are building the inner conditions that resilience needs to grow.

Having a creative self care practice is one of the most accessible ways to build that capacity. Daisy Fancourt's research shows that even brief regular engagement with creative activities reduces cortisol and strengthens immune function over time. The key word is regular. It is the habit that builds resilience, not the single session.

What we explore together

Each session opens with a grounding practice and a short reflection, then moves into making. The pace is yours and nothing needs to be finished.

We begin by exploring what resilience actually means to you and identifying the moments where a little more support would help. Through art meditation and mindfulness-based making, such as breathing and painting or intuitive mark making, we practice noticing what is happening in the body before it becomes overwhelming, and responding to it with self-kindness rather than judgment.

Across the sessions we try a range of creative self care practices and notice which ones genuinely settle you. We close by creating a resilience menu, a personal container filled with small prompts you can draw out whenever you need a moment of calm or a reminder of your own resourcefulness.

What you take with you

A personalised creative self care practice that is entirely your own. A resilience menu you can return to whenever you need a moment of calm or a reminder of your own resources. A clearer understanding of what resilience means for you personally and how to strengthen it over time. And the experience of building all of this alongside others.
